You’re 13 years old and have you haven’t eaten anything besides your school lunch all week. When you go home you are alone because mom and dad are working hard at one of several  jobs. Now, you have a big test and you can’t concentrate because you are hungry and no one at home could help you study, so you get frustrated.

For a lot of children, this is reality. Adverse Childhood Experiences or ACEs are stressful or traumatic events within a child’s life that can range anywhere from parental divorce to physical and emotional abuse or neglect. Research shows that 1 in 5 children will experience at least 3 or more ACEs before they turn 18. Children who experience ACEs are at risk of experiencing a range of side effects from addiction and financial stress to depression and suicide attempts.

Two of United Way’s BOLD Goals are to Prepare Children to Succeed and Help People Be Independent. Learn how we’re connecting students and children to the mental health services they need to be successful, and what you can do to help.
Join us for a panel- style discussion where you as an Emerging Leader have the opportunity to hear from local experts and leaders in the area of student and child mental health so that you can position yourself as an informed advocate when it comes to the mental health of young people in our community.

Do you have a co-worker or a friend who you think would be a great fit for the Emerging Leaders program? If so, bring them along to this event, because we would love to meet them!
