1,600 Volunteers Define What It Means to LIVE UNITED on 25th Annual Day of Caring

Over 1,600 volunteers LIVED UNITED by helping 470 local seniors for the 25th Annual Day of Caring on October 13th. This is United Way's largest one day event and thanks to our volunteers, local seniors received help with things like raking their yards, getting windows ready for winter, cleaning, and other household chores that they are not able to do on their own. We receive so many phone calls and thank you notes from seniors every year about how grateful they are to receive this service. Thank you to all of our volunteers for all of the hard work that you did! We appreciate YOU!

Below is a volunteer testimonial from Nikki at TMI Hospitality:

"I got to spend some time visiting with (our senior) about many things. We talked about her career at Muscatel Automotive where she performed many of their administrative duties for several years. I also used to work in the auto world, so we talked about mutual co-workers we both worked with. She talked about her house and having lived there for 50 years and the many changes in her neighborhood. She told me about her neighbor's house being a Habitat for Humanity home and how she just loved the previous young children that were residing there. I told her of my all women's Habitat build I was part of a few years back. She was so interested in that and asked several questions.

Lexi and I went to tell her we had finished up and I asked her if we could take a selfie with her. She was so worried about her hair. I told her not to worry, we’d just take one with just the girls, she giggled, and agreed to take the photo. She hugged Lexi and I a few times and told us how thankful she was to have such nice people like us to help her. She hugged us again and seemed like she wanted us to stay forever.

I’ve participated in this Day of Caring in the past with another company and really enjoyed it. With TMI, our group really had a lot of fun and I was grateful to have got to meet Marjorie. The fulfillment it gave me was truly rewarding. For many seniors, they seldom get visitors and just love to visit and tell you stories of their past. Marjorie completely made my day and made me proud to have participated."
